Palm Based GTD
Using Palms productively

Life Balance again

Monday, January 09, 2006
I've had this nice plain vanilla system on my Palm for close to a year now. Somehow, I don't seem inclined to use it much. I don't really have a lot of day to day stuff to track. I have some very major goals this year--find a new job, move to the new place, build a cabin, and sell the current place. Memos just don't seem to give these things the importance I want them to have. I've been talking to a GTD_Palm member about Life Balance, so I thought I might install it again. This time, I'm using it on Palm only. (I suppose if I can ever get Mac-on-Linux working, I could run the desktop from that.) And I'm not using Ratz's templates. I have it set up with each major project/goal as a TLI. There's a Daily Life TLI, where the day to day stuff goes and a Dreams TLI for those someday/maybe items. I am using GTD style places as categories, since I was using those in the built-in todo list. I'm syncing with the built-ins, since I want to be able to see this stuff in j-pilot. I'm just a couple of days into this, so I have no idea how long it will last. So far, it's been easy to remember to add stuff to my list and I think I've actually captured more than I have been writing up lately. I intend to keep this system very simple and close to the Llama's Advice Book. I've had success with the program in the past, so I'm hoping that this time I can actually USE it and not spend all my time tweaking it.

  • So, does this mean you are finished with NoteStudio?

  • Uh, nevermind. I just read through your archive and learned that it's been a long time since you used NS.

I've been looking at it because it seems like it's very simple, but at the same time it has so much potential -- you can make it into whatever form you want (which, I realize, is why so many people have trouble with it). I mostly use simple text notes on my PC (I use Notelens, which lets me sync my text notes with Outlook -- I then sync Outlook with KeySuite, which gets my notes onto the Palm -- very simple, very searchable, and compatible with just about anything).

I also picked up Mobile Note yesterday. I loaded it on my TX, but I can't quite figure out what purpose it's supposed to serve. Would you mind talking about how you use it (and, perhaps, compare it to your experiences with NoteStudio)? Thanks.
